From early career clinicians to emerging scientists, the NIHR GOSH Biomedical Research Centre (BRC)’s Academic Training Weekend is shaping the future of paediatric research - bringing together talent, expertise and ambition from across the UK.

Each year, the weekend brings together early career researchers (ECRs) from across the UK, from various disciplines and institutions, creating a unique space to learn, connect and accelerate research careers.

Since 2018, the weekends have cumulatively welcomed 202 participants from 59 institutions and 28 different professional backgrounds, reflecting the breadth and diversity of the paediatric research community. Through a carefully designed programme of workshops, seminars and networking opportunities, attendees were supported to take their next steps towards independent academic careers.

At its core, the weekend is about breaking down barriers - between professions, institutions and career stages. Participants engage with leading experts, peers and mentors, gaining practical insights into everything from fellowship applications to research leadership.

Importantly, accessibility is built in. Subsidised places and targeted funding ensure that opportunities are open to those who might otherwise be excluded, helping to widen participation in clinical academia and strengthen the talent pipeline.

Beyond the weekend itself, the impact is long-lasting. Attendees leave with:

  • Strengthened professional networks
  • Greater confidence to pursue academic careers
  • Skills that directly support fellowship success

The Academic Training Weekend is a spark for careers, reinforcing our commitment to developing the scientists who will shape the future of child health.
