Fifth annual 'Moment of Discovery' image competition open 5-18 January
1 Jan 2026, 9 a.m.
The annual Research and Innovation Image Competition, A Moment of Discovery, is back for the fifth year and open for entries between 5-18 January 2026.
Do you use photography or draw illustrations to capture what discovery means to you at GOSH? Do you use microscopy that not only furthers your research but also produces beautiful and intriguing science images that you’d love to share? Or maybe your research generates visualised data, imagery, or short videos?
We’re looking for impactful images, photos, GIFs, short videos or illustrations that highlight any aspect of the amazing research, innovation and discovery that happens across GOSH and our affiliated institutions.
Last year’s winner, Blooming Barrier by PhD student Lucy Holland, was showcased on ITV London, BBC Science Focus and shortlisted in Wellcome’s Photography Prize 2025.
How do I enter?
Sponsored by the National Institute for Health and Care Research GOSH Biomedical Research Centre (NIHR GOSH BRC), the competition opens for submissions on Monday 5 January 2026 and closes at 11pm on Sunday 18th January 2026.
All entries must be received by 11pm on Sunday 18th January 2026 to be entered into the competition.
To enter the competition, entrants need to complete all sections of the online form and, if their image is over 50MB, email it to research.communications@gosh.nhs.uk Shortlisted entrants will be updated by Monday 2 February.
Shortlisted entries and winner selection
Following a shortlisting process, individual winning entries will be selected by panel of stakeholders comprised of representatives including nursing, allied healthcare professionals, and GOSH Arts teams.
Once shortlisted, three independent judging panels will score the shortlisted images, and the scores will be combined to select the top three top images. These images will be promoted across our social media channels for our followers to choose the overall winning design.
All shortlisted and winning entries will be featured on the GOSH website, our social media channels and featured in displays at GOSH as part of research and innovation celebration events.
