Introduction

This is the first mental health framework to be developed at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). This framework represents a commitment to provide innovative and quality care, manage risk effectively, and to ensure the whole workforce can recognise and respond to the mental health needs of our patients.

Psychological and Mental health services at GOSH must recognise and respond to the needs of all patients across the Trust; those with diagnosed mental health conditions, those with symptoms of distress, and those with none, but where preventative good mental health support could change the prognosis of the journey for them.

The World Health Organisation’s vision is a world where mental health is valued, promoted and protected: where mental health conditions are prevented, where anyone can exercise their human rights and access high quality mental health care, and where everyone can participate fully in society free from stigma and discrimination.

NHS London’s Mental Health Strategy recognises that prevention of mental health problems is key to helping us live well, whether we currently have good mental health or otherwise. This aligns to the 10-year plan shift of sickness to prevention. It is estimated that for certain mental health conditions the need for support is rising; for example, depression and anxiety prevalence is projected to rise by 16% by 2040 (Health in 2040: projected patterns of illness in England, 2023).

The NHS 10-year plan with its three shifts also commits to £120m funding for 85 dedicated mental health emergency departments, recruiting 8,500 extra mental health workers and a national roll out of mental health support teams in schools, with almost one million more young people set to benefit this year. It also has focus on reducing the long waits described by the Children's Commissioner.
