Past Lives and Future Tools

Four pieces of thin, colourful ceramics lined up on a shelf.

Lubna Chowdhary has created a series of hand-glazed ceramic tiles titled Past Lives and Future Tools for the waiting spaces and the terrace areas in the Sight and Sound Centre.

The artwork is a subtle celebration of the building’s heritage and of the creativity of children. The building was originally a hospital for the Italian Community, founded by the philanthropist Giovanni Ortelli who made his fortune making eye-glasses and lenses. The artwork also combines playful abstract shapes, developed in collaboration with families, and recognisable objects you might find in your home to create a welcoming and relaxed feel in the waiting spaces.
