Psychology workshops
The paediatric psychology team run several workshops for parents and children. This document gives you further information about these workshops.
Workshops for children and young people
This workshop is an opportunity to connect with a small group of young people who have shared similar experiences of being on active cancer treatment, finishing treatment in the last year or undergoing cancer-like treatment without having a diagnosis. Using fun activities involving a beads-based task, we hope to explore what is important in your life outside of your illness, getting to know and hearing about everyone’s individual stories!
It is a full one-day workshop (with parents joining at the end of the day) that is run in person at Great Ormond Street Hospital and usually takes place during the school holidays.
This group is for siblings aged 8 to 11 of children who are under the care of haematology, oncology, neuro-oncology or bone marrow transplant teams. All children will share the experience of having a sibling under the care of GOSH although their siblings will have different diagnoses, journeys, and be at different stages of their treatment.
The aim of the group is to bring together siblings who share similar experiences to offer a space to connect with each other, enjoy a morning of therapeutic activities and an afternoon tour exploring our generous host, the London Zoo. The group will be for siblings only - not for the patient under GOSH or parents/carers to attend.
What have participants said about the group?
- “I like the games and the animals.”
- “Loved making the calm jars.”
- “It helped me understand more about managing feelings.”
- “It makes you feel understood because other people are going through the same thing.”
In this workshop we focus on changing ideas around beauty and developing ways to manage curiosity and possible unkindness from others.
This is a supportive and positive group where we share ideas for managing challenges. It’s also an opportunity to meet other people living with visible difference.
This workshop is a one-off session. It’s run in person at GOSH, and usually takes place during the school holidays.
What have people found helpful about this workshop?
- “How to talk to other people about my visible difference and how to react if they are unkind.”
- “To meet other children that are like me.”
Workshops for parents and carers
In this workshop we explore ways of managing curiosity from others about your child’s visible difference. We also help you to build skills and techniques that you and your child may benefit from using throughout their childhood.
It's an opportunity to meet and share ideas and challenges with others in similar situations to help you feel better equipped as parents to support your child.
This workshop is run online across two sessions. It is for parents and carers of children living with visible differences of any age.
What have participants said about this workshop?
- “It was helpful to meet other parents going through similar experiences.”
In this workshop we discuss:
- The experience of anxiety in a hospital setting.
- How to prepare your child for their procedure.
- What you can do to support your child in hospital.
All families attending this workshop will be supporting their child through various procedures. This workshop is a one-off online session.
What have participants said about this workshop?
- “I feel much calmer and empowered when preparing my child for the future appointments or procedures. During the workshop practitioners spoke about modelling coping during procedure, keeping our worries separate and advised us about calming strategies.”
How can I sign up to a workshop?
If you would like to attend a workshop, please ask a member of your child’s medical team to make a referral to psychological medicine. All workshops will include a follow-up call with a member of our team to discuss whether you would like any additional support from our team.
