How to refer a patient

For an outpatient appointment

Referrals are usually by letter (often preceded by a telephone conversation) normally to a named consultant or team although referrals without a named consultant will be allocated to the most appropriate consultant. Referrals can be by email where the ‘referred to’ consultants email is known.

Inter-hospital transfer

Respiratory Medicine and Transitional Care has a multidisciplinary approach to the investigation and management of children with acute or chronic lung disease or complex respiratory conditions.

There are approximately 200 respiratory in-patient admissions per annum to our 11-bed Badger Ward, as well as over 1200 sleep studies, performed in the Sleep Unit and on Badger Ward. The in-patient service comprises a mix of children with complex and chronic short and long-term lung disease including a significant proportion with congenital anomalies of the upper and lower airway.

The respiratory unit runs five transitional care beds for children on long term ventilation. Miffy Ward is a five-bed Transitional Care Unit for children of all ages needing long-term respiratory support and their families. Length of stay is between three to six months, whilst a care package is created to enable the child to be discharged back into their local community.

The secondary and tertiary care of approximately 200 cystic fibrosis (CF) patients is a major part of the current workload. There is a well established multi-disciplinary team of professionals dedicated to the care of children with CF.
