Joining GOSH as an Adult Registered Nurse

31 May 2018, 5:01 p.m.

Catia Pinto, Ward Sister on CICU

Catia worked in adult nursing for approximately four years before she jumped to paediatric nursing at GOSH.Catia has always had an interest in cardiac nursing and felt that GOSH was the right place for her, given that the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit is the only one of its kind in the country. Catia has progressed in her career from Staff Nurse to Ward Sister and says that if you have an interest in cardiac nursing, GOSH is the right place to apply given the level of support and education that is on offer for both adult and children’s nurses.

We spoke to her about moving from adult nursing to treating seriously ill children at GOSH.

What opportunities are there at GOSH for Adult Registered Nurses?

We are recruiting Band 5 and 6 Nurses to join our team on Alligator Ward which is opening soon! With 12 high dependency and nine intensive care beds, our Alligator Ward offers specialist services for children with conditions affecting the heart, lungs and airways.

GOSH is a children’s hospital – can Adult Registered Nurses move there?

Yes, absolutely! As long as you are registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) and have a valid PIN. We welcome Adult Registered Nurses and value the skills and experience they can bring.

Can adult nurses who trained abroad work at GOSH?

Some countries only offer adult registration upon qualifying, so as long as you are registered with the NMC and have a valid PIN, we welcome you and value the skills and experience you can bring. Details of registering with the NMC can be found on their website.

What experience do new nurses need?

New nurses will need to be confident administering IV drugs, have exceptional communication and time management skills, and be passionate about developing their already expert knowledge.

Does GOSH offer any specific paediatric training?

Joining us as a children’s or adult nurse, you will benefit from extensive development opportunities. These include a comprehensive foundation in paediatric cardiac nursing and intensive care nursing.

You will also have an assigned mentor to guide you through training.

How will GOSH help with career development opportunities for new nurses?

We are committed to developing and supporting all our nursing and care staff along their career pathway, regardless of Band or NMC registration. The career opportunities open to Adult Registered Nurses are the same as any other nurse within GOSH.
