Getting help with your travel costs
If you travel to GOSH by public transport, you may be able to get help with your travel costs if you are receiving any of the following benefits.
Healthcare Travel Costs System
If you travel to GOSH by public transport, you may be able to get help with your travel costs to and from hospital via the cheapest suitable mode of transport.
You may be able entitled to help if you are receiving any of the following benefits –please note you will need to show the following proof:
- Income Support. You will need a bank statement or letter from DWP dated within the last three months.
- Income Based Job Seeker’s Allowance (JSA). You will need a letter from DWP dated within the last three months.
- Income Based Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). You will need a letter from DWP dated within the last three months.
- Universal Credit. You will need to have the payment journal on your mobile and show the last payment or print the payment details within three months.
- Low Income Tax Credit Award. You will need to have the letter for the year.
- Pension Credit Guaranteed. You will need to have an award letter valid within a year.
- To be in receipt of a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate.
- If you are on a low income and in receipt of certificate HC2 or HC3.
You must have proof of benefit to claim your fares. Please note, we do not pay booking, insurance or additional fees. For further details as to how to claim, please visit the Fares and Reimbursement desk in the GOSH main building or contact them:

If you need to use a taxi, you should agree this in advance with the hospital.
If you are attending GOSH from Ireland, Scotland or Wales, you will need to submit your travel reimbursement claims to your local health board.
If the Travel and Reimbursement desk is closed, please collect a ‘HC5(T) – Refund claim form: (travel costs to receive NHS treatment)’ from the Main Reception. Once you have completed this form please post to:

Claiming Congestion Charge, ULEZ or Tunnel Payments
Congestion Charge
You may be able to claim back the Congestion Charge if:
- The patient has a compromised immune system, requires regular therapy or assessment, or requires regular surgical intervention.
and
- is clinically assessed as too weak or disabled to travel to the hospital on public transport.
- Use the official Transport for London (TfL) website to pay the charge online. This is cheaper than other websites, and we will not be able to refund the difference.
- The congestion charge must be paid on the same day of the appointment. We do not pay late payment fees.
- Bring a hard copy or a PDF document of the TfL receipt to show at the Fares and Reimbursement Office.

Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in central London
You may need to pay a fee to drive within the Ultra-Low Emission Zone in central London.
You can find out more, including whether your vehicle meets ULEZ standards, on the TFL website.

Tunnel payments
You need to pay a charge to drive through Blackwall or Silvertown tunnel, unless your vehicle is exempt or has a 100% discount, you can find out more on the Transport for London website.
Bring a hard copy or a PDF document of the TfL receipt to show at the Fares and Reimbursement Office.
