Sami's GOSH family

Sami was diagnosed with an incredibly rare genetic illness called Multisystemic Smooth Muscle Dysfunction Syndrome and has been coming to GOSH for many years.

Clinicians had feared the complexities of this syndrome made it too dangerous to operate, but as Sami’s condition worsened, they called an emergency meeting of around 40 experts, including a specialist surgeon from St Bartholomew’s Hospital who usually operates on adults.

In December 2021, more than 50 clinicians from Great Ormond Street Hospital and Barts Health NHS Trust teamed up to perform a lifesaving world-first operation for Sami.

Following the success of the first operation, Sami had a further two major operations and after months of recovery is now back at school.
