Urology admission criteria

This is a list of patient diagnoses and procedures which are admitted to Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) by our Urology team, the timeframe in which they should be treated and their estimated length of stay (LoS). 
Health professionals are reminded that this information is for guidance only.

Emergency admissions

Children with the following diagnoses are considered an emergency and should be transferred to GOSH within hours from receipt of referral.
Diagnosis/Procedure Estimated LoS
Bladder exstrophy 2 weeks plus
Cloacal exstrophy 1 month plus
Kidney trauma Dependent on trauma grade
Posterior urethral valves (may also present as an urgent case) Treatment dependent

Urgent admissions

Children with the following diagnoses should be transferred to GOSH within days from receipt of referral.

Hernia repairs (often linked to other diagnosis) Day case
Posterior urethral valves (may also present as an emergency) Treatment dependent
Pyeloplasty (laparascopic or open) 3-5 days
Testicular torsion Treatment dependent
Tumours - kidney, bladder, testicular (may also be elective) 1 week plus

Elective admissions

Children with the following diagnoses should be referred to GOSH via the non-emergency pathway.

Bladder reconstruction for continence 8-10 days
Buried penis Overnight
Diagnostic cystoscopy Day case
Genitoplasty 5-7 days
Hypospadias (staged treatment) 1-2 days
Laparoscopic nephrectomy/hemi-nephrectomy 2-4 days
Open ureteric reimplantation 3-5 days
Orchidopexy Day case
Tumours - kidney, bladder, testicular (may also present as an urgent case) 1 week plus
