Plastic surgery admission criteria

This is a list of patient diagnoses and procedures which are admitted to Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) by our Plastic surgery team, the timeframe in which they should be treated and their estimated length of stay (LoS).  Health professionals are reminded that this information is for guidance only.

Emergency admissions

Children with the following diagnoses are considered an emergency and should be transferred to GOSH within hours from receipt of referral.

Skin graft complications 5-7 days

Urgent admissions

Children with the following diagnoses should be transferred to GOSH within days from receipt of referral.

Elective admissions

Children with the following diagnoses should be referred to GOSH via the non-emergency pathway.

Harvest of bone or cartilage 1-2 days
Harvest of skin/fat 1-2 days
Liposuction of subcutaneous tissue Overnight stay
Multiple osteotomy +/- internal fixation HFQ Overnight stay
Other specified correction of congenital deformity of hand 1-3 days
Other specified split autograft of skin 1-2 days
Pinnaplasty Day case or overnight stay
Reconstruction of external ear using graft - 1st stage 6 days
Reconstruction of external ear using graft - 2nd stage 1-2 days
Refashioning of scar Day case
Release of constriction of sheath of tendon Day case/overnight stay
Unspecified plastic excision of skin Day case/overnight stay
