Lorenzo Biassoni

Dr Lorenzo Biassoni is a Consultant in Nuclear Medicine and has worked at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) since 2002.

SPECT and PET in children, especially in neuroblastomas and other paediatric solid tumours. Isotope renography in nephro-urology.

Qualifications and training

  • MSc (Nucl Med), University of London, (1993 -95)

  • Fellowship of the European Board of Nuclear Medicine, FEBNM, (1997)

  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (2008)

Dr Biassoni studied Medicine at the University of Rome. After a residency at the National Cancer Institute in Genova (Italy), he specialized in Nuclear Medicine at the University of Genova.

He subsequently moved to London, where he undertook the Master of Sciences Degree in Nuclear Medicine at the University of London, while being attached to the St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College.

He worked in Nuclear Medicine training and research positions in London at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, St George’s Hospital and St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

He was first appointed as a nuclear medicine consultant to Barking, Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust in 1999. After three years of general nuclear medicine experience as a single-handed consultant, he was appointed as a nuclear medicine consultant to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and Barts and the London NHS Trust in 2002.

Dr Biassoni is actively involved in teaching and training: he has been a member of the Paediatric Committee of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine for six years and he chaired the Committee for three years; he has been on the scientific committee of several national and international paediatric nuclear medicine organizations; and he runs a number of teaching events on paediatric nuclear medicine nationally and internationally.

He is a frequently invited speaker to nuclear medicine and radiology conferences. He is author – co-author of 8 chapters for internationally published textbooks. He is on the editorial board of three international peer-reviewed scientific journals and is the senior editor for nuclear medicine of BJR Case Reports.

Research interests

Dr Biassoni’s research interests are focused on nuclear medicine in paediatric oncology, in particular neuroblastoma, and paediatric nephro-urology. He is also interested in paediatric applications of SPECT CT.
