Neurology and Neurosurgery

The Occupational Therapy team provide inpatient care to the Neurology and Neurosurgery services.  The occupational therapists are available to answer your questions and to offer support to local services that may require additional information regarding your child's needs. This is to ensure continuity in care. The occupational therapists provide specialist assessment and advice as part of the multidisciplinary team treating your child. This advice will be given to support your child's independence in self-care activities, schoolwork and play. Specific advice may be provided regarding motor skills, hand function, seating and postural management, self-care skills, visual perceptual skills, pain and sensory concerns. Further advice regarding accessibility at home and school and the use of equipment in these environments may be given.

Intervention may include loaning your child a seating system or wheelchair while they are an inpatient, providing hand and elbow splints to prevent contractures and advising on maximising your child's ability to participate in daily activities.

The occupational therapists provide early neuro-rehabilitation where appropriate and will refer your child on to local services, if they require ongoing treatment when discharged from Great Ormond Street Hospital.  This may include referrals to local occupational therapy, social services, educational and play services.
