Clinics and wards related to the Long-Term Follow-Up for Childhood Cancer department

Long-term follow-up clinics for children and young adults take place every Tuesday on Safari Outpatients, Level 9, Southwood Building at Great Ormond Street Hospital.Young adult long-term follow-up clinics are held on Monday afternoons at University College Hospital. Young people will be transferred to this clinic after they have attended a transition clinic in preparation for the transfer.

First Tuesday of the month

Long-term follow-up haematology/growth/endocrine clinic.

Clinic code: HAEGRO

Dr Alison Leiper runs this clinic with Dr Assunta Albanese. Dr Alison Leiper has expertise in endocrine (hormone) problems that can develop after childhood cancer and Dr Albanese is a paediatric endocrinologist. The clinic starts in the morning and runs all day.

Children who might have an endocrine problem resulting from the treatment for childhood cancer are referred to this clinic from the acute haematology/oncology clinic, bone marrow transplant service and long-term follow-up clinic.

Second Tuesday of the month (from 2pm)

Oncology/haematology long term follow up clinics for children under 12 years of age.

Clinic codes: LTFLR, LTFJEK

Children who are at least five years from the end of treatment will be referred to this clinic and may be seen by Dr Riley or Dr Kingston.

All the clinicians have an expertise in late effects following childhood cancer.

Third Tuesday of the month (from 2pm)

Oncology/haematology long-term follow-up clinics for children age 12 to 16 years and on certain month’s patients over 16 years old.

Clinic codes: LTFALA, LTFO12, LTFAR, LTFOS.

Children who are at least five years from the end of treatment will be referred to this clinic and may be seen by Dr Leiper, Dr Chowdhury, Dr Rao or Dr Slater.

All the clinicians have an expertise in late effects following childhood cancer.

Last Tuesday of the month (from 1.20pm)

Long-term follow-up for children who have had a bone marrow transplant for an oncology or haematology condition.

Clinic code: BMTLTF

The lead for bone marrow transplant long term follow up is Dr Alison Leiper and the clinic is run with Dr Lynne Riley, Dr Anu Rao and Dr Tanzina Chowdhury. All the clinicians have expertise in late effects following bone marrow transplant.

First Thursday of every month

Transition Clinics in preparation for young people before transferring to adult services.

Saddhasura Denton, clinical nurse specialist for long-term follow-up, runs this clinic and has expertise in late effects and a special interest in preparing young people for transfer to adult health care services.

Saddhasura Denton, the clinical nurse specialist, is available to give advice about health problems that may be related to past treatment for childhood cancer. Regular childhood illnesses need to be discussed with the family doctor.
