The new Children’s Cancer Centre will deliver:

  • A significantly improved environment which reflects what patients and families tell us they would like, with more space to play to help patients get active.
  • A ward-based kitchen on one of our cancer wards will mean we are able to work to improve food provision and nutrition.
  • More accommodation for families to stay close by their child in the critical care unit.
  • High-specification clinical areas, making it easier for clinical teams to deliver the very best treatments and innovation to develop kinder treatments in the future.
  • A new main entrance for the whole hospital, which will welcome children and put them at ease.
  • Better integrated site that help reduce inefficiencies, with for example a larger special feeds production centre and a more patient friendly pharmacy dispensary on the ground floor.
  • A roof garden and outdoor space so children, families and staff across the whole hospital campus can enjoy nature, have respite and be at ease.
  • A new hospital school so children do not miss out on normal activities, can learn and achieve their potential.

The Children’s Cancer Centre (CCC) at GOSH will be the new home for our specialist inpatient and day care cancer services. We will care for children and young people from across London, the southeast of England, and beyond. With three inpatient floors and a floor dedicated to day care, we will have more space to treat children and young people.

Developing the CCC also allows us to increase the space we have for our imaging service, operating theatres, and critical care unit. These services will support children and young people at GOSH, no matter their condition or diagnosis.

As part of the redevelopment, we are building a new entrance and welcome area for the whole hospital. This includes a new pharmacy dispensary, making it easier for patients to collect medicines to take home. Also on the ground floor will be the new bigger location for our hospital school. Our specialist feed production centre will also move into the CCC, with more space and an improved environment.

The CCC is partnership work: Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity is undertaking it largest ever appeal to raise £300 million to help build the Children’s Cancer Centre, to drive transformation in children’s cancer care and save more lives. We are really grateful to all GOSH Charity supporters for the generosity and commitment to helping us develop the fantastic new facility.

Our clinical teams have been central to the design development, and patients and families have been closely involved to ensure their needs are at the heart of the building.

The construction team is Sisk and our architects are BDP.

Through our Children and Young People’s Forum and other engagement activities, we’ve listened closely to what matters most to our patients.  They’ve told us they want access to nature and spaces that feel like home.

As we move from design to construction and opening, children and young people will continue to be involved – helping shape art installations, the main entrance reception, and other key features of the new centre.

We are anticipating that the CCC will open to patients in 2029.

In 2021, GOSH declared a climate emergency and committed to becoming a net zero carbon organisation.

We’re working with our construction partner, Sisk, to ensure the CCC is built sustainably. We’re aiming for a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’ – a globally recognised standard for sustainable building.

The CCC has been designed to integrate with existing hospital buildings and maximise clinical efficiency. It will be a modern, future-proofed space that also connects with the local community.

We’re also creating outdoor spaces, including balconies and a 100-metre-long roof garden, bringing nature into the heart of the hospital.
