Student nurses

Training our student nurses

Located in central London, GOSH offers you the chance to train at one of the world's leading children's hospitals.

With the widest range of paediatric specialities in one hospital, and a simulation programme bespoke to student nurses, your placement experience at GOSH will be completely unique.

Our extensive student education programme and dedicated team of student practice facilitators will help you develop the skills you need to succeed in your training. While on placement with us, all of our student nurses benefit from the following:

Unique clinical experience

With the widest range of paediatric specialities in the UK, our student nurses develop their experience in a unique clinical setting. Placements take place within a range of departments including Cardiorespiratory, Critical Care Services, Immunology, Cancer, Infectious Diseases and Laboratory Medicine, Medicine, Diagnostics and Therapeutic Services, Neurosciences, Outpatients, Research, Surgery and International and Private Patients.

Supporting our students

Our priority is to ensure that all of our student nurses are well supported. Our friendly and dedicated team of student practice facilitators will help you get the most out of your placement with us. We take the emotional wellbeing of all of nurses with the utmost importance and provide an extensive support network specifically designed for student nurses. To facilitate this the Student team hosts a weekly hour of wellbeing support and resources.

The student practice facilitator team at GOSH is available to all student nurses throughout every placement and is unique in that it is the only practice facilitator team in the NHS dedicated to paediatric nursing students. This means that our student nurses have protected support time that is guaranteed through their placement experience.

All of our student nurses are allocated a practice assessor who will supervise and support them while on placement, and there is also a student nurse forum which runs for an hour per week and provides the opportunity for students of all cohorts to reflect on their experience and support one another.

Simulation programme

Our student nurses are able to access our clinical simulation centre and participate in scenario-based learning using state-of-the-art interactive teaching tools. We offer a simulation programme bespoke to student nurses run by dedicated Practice Educators for pre-registration simulation learning.

The simulation programme is run in collaboration with other clinical teams to help build team working skills and represent a realistic working ward environment. The training helps to develop confidence, communication skills and emotional resilience. It also helps match theory to practice over the 3 years and is mapped out according to university curriculum.

The training reflects the skills needed on placement and is designed to help students through their OSCEs. The intention is to use a variety of approaches to provide exposure, experience and clinical practice with a range of nursing skills and clinical scenarios.

Student Forum

This provides the opportunity for students of all cohorts to come together and reflect on their practice using peer support to guide through any challenges or questions.

Places are limited and availability depends on the demand from our partner universities, as our hosted students take priority. For more information please email: nurse.elective@gosh.nhs.uk

There is a committed team of Practice Assessors across the wards to ensure that pre-registration nurses are supported whilst in practice. At GOSH we also have a dedicated Student Practice Facilitator team to provide additional support to pre-registration students.
