NIHR GOSH BRC Theme New Projects Funding Call

Researcher with pipette

OPEN: The NIHR GOSH BRC New Projects Call aims to fund novel translational research ideas, which seek to develop new therapies, biomarkers, diagnostics or surgical interventions to benefit children and the adults they will become with rare and/or complex conditions. Around £170,000 is available in this call to support several projects across some of our strategic research themes. The application deadline is Tuesday 20 February.

Funding call information

Applications submitted through the call should seek to propose novel research ideas around therapies, biomarkers, diagnostics and surgical innovations, including proof of concept, validation studies, new methodologies, novel uses of data and/or PPIE activity.

We would expect successful applicants to generate preliminary data to support future grant application and patent applications, and ultimately to accelerate the likelihood of the new interventions delivering patient benefit in future. Projects may be based in the lab, the clinic, or be data driven, but they must focus on human cells, tissues, participants, or data. NIHR funding is not allowed to support any research using animals; therefore, the research project must not involve animal work.

Applications are welcome from all staff substantively employed by either GOSH/UCL GOS ICH, including clinicians, non-clinical, nursing and AHP staff and any others not mentioned here. Project funding will be available from 01 April 2024.

The individual remit for each of the themes has been proposed by its leadership team. Each theme has also outlined the type of funding you are able to apply for and the upper limit for the amount requested. A summary of remits, call structures and budgets available in the guidance document (see the 'How to apply' section below).

Our Gene, Stem and Cellular Therapies theme does not have a budget for this call as all funds for the year were allocated to projects submitted to a previous call. There is also no specific budget for our Applied Child Health Informatics theme in this call, however projects submitted to any research theme may include funding for data related aspects of the research study.

You can apply for a project focused solely on PPIE activities through this call, where the project is aimed at supporting researchers to actively involve and/or engage patients and the public in research which is translational and aligns with one of our research themes.
