NIHR GOSH BRC Intermediate Fellowship for Wider Healthcare Professionals 2027

This Fellowship is funded by the NIHR GOSH BRC, a collaboration between Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (ICH), and by Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. The NIHR GOSH BRC provides cutting-edge facilities and world-leading expertise and access to over 200 rare disease patient populations allowing our staff and NHS, university and industry collaborators to conduct pioneering translational research into childhood illnesses. We were first awarded BRC status from the NIHR in 2007 and, in 2022, we secured £37 million for our fourth term until March 2028.

The Intermediate Fellowship aims to support post-doctoral wider healthcare professionals working in child health research to make the next step in their research career towards independence and becoming clinical academic leaders of the future.

This includes nurses, allied health professionals (AHPs), pharmacists, psychologists, healthcare scientists, social scientists and any other appropriate clinical professional who is not a doctor or dentist.

Applications are welcome from staff substantively employed by either GOSH, UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (UCL GOS ICH) or Paediatric Excellence Initiative partner sites (Alder Hey, Birmingham or Sheffield Children’s Hospitals) who are wider healthcare professionals, including nurses, AHPs, pharmacists, psychologists, healthcare scientists, social scientists and any other appropriate clinical professional who is not a doctor or dentist.

The Intermediate Fellowship scheme is funded by the NIHR GOSH BRC and GOSH Charity, and at least £70k is available to support the 2027 Intermediate Fellowship call. The Fellowship provides funding for salary costs for up to 50% FTE for 12 months. Successful applicant(s) can start their Fellowship from 18 January 2027 and the latest date they can start the Fellowship 31 March 2027. Applicants can decide the most optimal timeframe for their Fellowship, as this may be dependent on the objectives outlined in their application. Applicants are encouraged to undertake clinical responsibilities alongside their Fellowship for the remaining 50% FTE.

You may utilise the protected time the Fellowship offers to achieve objectives aimed at consolidating skills and experience needed to take the next step in your clinical academic research career and to strengthen any external application(s) you plan to develop and submit. Any future fellowship you plan to apply for should be based at GOSH, UCL GOS Institute of Child Health, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital or Sheffield Children’s Hospital as your host NHS Trust.

Applicants will need to outline their overarching aim and objectives in their application. One of the objectives should include preparing and submitting an external application during the Fellowship. However, this should not be the primary focus of the Fellowship. Instead, the overarching aim should be centred on the clinical research programme you intend to deliver and skills you intend to develop, with the preparation of a competitive external funding application forming a key milestone that supports your longer-term clinical academic career progression. You may also want to include an objective around developing a new skill to strengthen your experience as a researcher. Fellows will also be expected to demonstrate how they will spend time during the fellowship contribution to the ambitions set out in GOSH’s (or associated partner site hospital's) research hospital strategy, including acting as a champion and role model for research amongst wider healthcare professionals.

Applicants can also apply for up to £10,000 of funding towards consumables, statistical support, training and development as part of their Intermediate Fellowship, with appropriate justification. This budget can also include funding to conduct patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) activities necessary to enhance the external fellowship application. • The deadline for applications is Thursday 08 October 2026, 5.00 p.m.
• Completed application forms (with e-signatures) as well as an up-to-date CV and formal costings from your R&D office should be submitted as a word document and by e-mail to brc@gosh.nhs.uk by the deadline.
• Following submission of the applications, they will be reviewed and shortlisted by members of the BRC’s Leadership Team in addition to internal and external members of academic staff. They will assess applications using the selection criteria outlined below.
• Shortlisted applicants will be invited for interview.
• Interviews dates are being finalised, but they are likely to take place the week commencing 30 November 2026.
• Awardees will be notified within one week of the interview date.
• We anticipate supporting at least one Intermediate Fellowship, but this is subject to change and dependent on budget.

Your application form will be assessed again the following criteria:

• Likelihood the proposed Intermediate Fellowship will result in the applicant making the next step in their research career as outlined in their application form.
• Innovative aspects of the proposed project.
• Demonstrated support of the appropriate supervisory team.
• Track record of the applicant (including publications, presentations, grant funding, and leadership) as appropriate for career level of the applicant.
• Outline of vision by the applicant of research direction and career path.
• Intended contribute to GOSH’s (or associated partner sites) research hospital strategy.

Successful Intermediate Fellows will be provided with a training package of support, including attendance at the NIHR GOSH BRC Academic Training Weekend, regular support and mentorship from the senior BRC leadership team or partner site representatives, and BRC Junior Faculty membership.

Successful Intermediate Fellows are required to identify appropriate external funding calls to submit applications to during their fellowship. The planned external fellowship should be based at GOSH, ICH or within one of our partner sites.

If an Intermediate Fellow secures external funding before completion of the Intermediate Fellowship, they will be expected to take up this external funding at the earliest opportunity.
