Industrial and commercial opportunities

Great Ormond Street Hospital's (GOSH) commitment to being at the forefront of world-leading medical research and innovation means we are continually engaging with partners on commercial opportunities.

We are keen to work alongside pharmaceutical, medical device, biotech and diagnostic companies to continue to provide our patients with opportunities to participate in cutting-edge research and innovation.

GOSH hosts a large number of industry research studies across our clinical areas, and this is continually expanding.

Commercial research

GOSH is ready to host studies sponsored or fully-funded by commercial companies. The commercial research currently undertaken at the Trust is largely comprised of studies involving clinical trials of new drugs or medical devices, but also includes qualitative and non-interventional research.

The GOSH and University College London GOS Institute of Child Health Joint Research and Development Office is responsible for costing, pricing and contracting all research activity in GOSH that is funded by a commercial company, including clinical trials sponsored by industry, clinical and non-clinical collaborative research projects. We ensure that legally adequate contractual arrangements, including indemnity, are in place and conduct full research governance reviews before a study commences.

Our clinical, non clinical delivery teams and governance team  are able to provide advice on feasibility and study setup, offering a wealth of experience and insight into all aspects of paediatric research. We also provide industry with information about research capabilities and opportunities for technology transfer. We are happy to advise investigators on intellectual property rights, working closely with Technology Transfer Offices to facilitate commercialisation. We are also able to assist with Material Transfer Agreements and Confidentiality Agreements

Our Clinical Research Facility provides infrastructure to deliver commercial sponsored studies on time and to target.

Digital innovation

The Data Research, Innovation and Virtual Environments (DRIVE) unit at GOSH provides companies the opportunity to collaborate on data and digital technology projects.

The unit leads on developing digital infrastructure, expertise and provides a physical space to support innovation in paediatric care.

Through collaborations, the Innovation Hub supports development and early-stage testing of data and technology solutions through proof-of-concepts, and support successful solutions to be scaled in practice at GOSH and beyond.

The team have expertise in technology project and partnership management, healthcare evaluation and outcomes measurement. The Hub also brings together expertise from across the hospital to develop ideas for use of data and technology, and to test them.

DRIVE also forges commercial partnerships with national and international leaders in healthcare innovation. Partnerships are core to our mission as we know that when we share resource, expertise and opportunity, we can achieve so much more.

GOSH is part of national and global networks focused on healthcare innovation. These involve other NHS Foundation Trusts and medical centres, academia, and industry including start-ups.

These networks support improvements in treatment and care for children and young people at GOSH and on a global scale through:

  • Collaborations on research studies and operational improvement projects using data and advanced analytics
  • Sharing insights on latest innovations and how they were deployed
  • Leveraged funds and opportunities through collaboration

You can find out about some of these below.

European Children’s Hospital Organisation (ECHO)

Children admitted to hospital face unique health challenges that are not always recognized or prioritized by larger health policy initiatives. ECHO was created to address these challenges and improve the health of children across Europe.

GOSH contributes to, and benefits from opportunities with this network as key ambitions for ECHO include addressing data challenges and a lack of research and innovation for the benefit of children in hospital.

You can find out more about ECHO here.

Children’s Hospital Alliance (CHA)

The CHA is a network of paediatric specialist NHS trusts working together to improve quality, access and experience of hospital care. It is co-chaired by the CEOs at GOSH and Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. It focusses on learning, leadership and advocacy for children’s hospitals, and runs a range of shared programmes including on innovation and tackling health inequalities.

The PHEMS project

GOSH is one of six leading European children’s hospitals that make up the PHEMS project consortium. PHEMS (short for ‘Paediatric Hospitals as European drives for multi-party computation and synthetic data generation capabilities across clinical specialities and data types’) project will revolutionise how children’s health data is managed and used across Europe and advance research and innovation in healthcare for children, while ensuring patient’s rights and data privacy remain protected.

The Cell and Gene Therapy Service

The Cell and Gene Therapy Facility is a manufacturing site for advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) licensed by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.

It is comprised of 7 bespoke laboratories and provides comprehensive facilities for all stages of manufacture. This includes tissue culture labs, storage, waste treatment and quality control. This work is labour intensive, highly regulated and innovative. The facility also has a simulation suite that is used for education and training.

In 2023, we were granted a Manufacturer's Authorisation Licence for the manufacture of viral vectors, helping to unclog an industry-wide bottleneck.

Through commercial partnerships, external organisations can gain access to our cutting-edge facilities and quality assurance services.
