Metabolic medicine admission criteria for urgent/emergency admissions

Patients with the following diagnoses need urgent referral to the Metabolic team. Children will usually be admitted as an emergency (in 24-48hrs). The estimated length of stay will be case dependent. Health Professionals are reminded that this information is for guidance only.

Diagnosis
1. Hyperammonaemia
2. Unexplained persistent lactic acidosis
3. Unexplained persistent metabolic acidosis
4. Unexplained hypoglycaemia
5. Neonate with suspected metabolic liver failure 6. New biochemical metabolic diagnosis for dietary management
7. New diagnosis osteopetrosis with preserved vision
8. Newly diagnosed Pompe Disease prior to commencing enzyme replacement therapy
9. Patient with known metabolic disorder on emergency regimen in local hospital and deteriorating, or not improving after 48hrs
10. Metabolic decompensation requiring total parenteral nutrition (TPN)
11. Undiagnosed possible metabolic disorder requiring urgent peri-mortem investigations
