Statement on the review of our Urology Surgical Services

15 Jan 2020, 4:16 p.m.

Our focus is always on improving the way we work so we provide the best possible care to our patients and their families. External reviews of our clinical services are one way we do this.

In March 2019, we commissioned a review of our Urology Surgical Service from the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS).  This was prompted following feedback from staff and to ensure that the service was set up to provide the highest standards of care to the children, young people and families it looks after.

It is important to us that we are open and transparent about our services. This is why we included the Review in our public board papers in November. We have also discussed this review with NHS England and Improvement and the Care Quality Commission.

The review recognised that the service has a group of excellent dedicated surgeons who look after patients well. It also raised some concerns around issues such as team working and said this could have the potential to impact on patient care and safety if not resolved. We would like to reassure our patients and their families that the report did not say there were any current patient safety concerns.

We have taken the issues raised in the report and the recommendations extremely seriously and there has been good progress made. Successful mediation and the first away days have taken place and very constructive conversations have happened between all consultants and they are now working together to shape their service to better serve the needs of their patients.

We will continue to feedback to the Royal College about progress made.
