Recognising our staff working over the festive period

It may be Christmas Day, but we still have staff across the hospital who are working hard to care for our patients and their families.

The GOSH teams working today allow the hospital to function as usual. They include the lab team, who are working to ensure the testing of important samples continues; the catering team, who are cooking up a feast so families and staff can enjoy a festive meal; and our clinicians are continuing to provide our patients with life-saving care.

Yesterday, some of our patients, families and staff were featured on Sky News. Two families who will be spending Christmas with us shared what it’s like to be in hospital at this time of year. Sky News also captured the beautiful carol concert at our chapel, and some of our festive therapy dogs, who are bringing joy to children’s bedsides. You can catch up with Sky News here.

We know it can be difficult for our patients and their families to spend the festive season away from home. Our wonderful staff try to make their day as magical as possible so that they can celebrate regardless of where they call home this Christmas time – including bringing presents and visitors who spread holiday cheer.

Today, you may see familiar faces featured on ITV’s This Morning. PICU nurses, Olivia and Lauryn, microbiologist Shelia and catering staff, Dave and Arthira, were all featured in the programme. They spoke about what it is like to work on Christmas Day and what their day entails. This Morning highlighted the different teams that keep going over this period and thanked them for their dedication.

Laura, also a PICU nurse, will be interviewed live on-air during Gary Davies’s Christmas Day show, on BBC Radio 2, later today, focusing on her day at work.

A big thank you to all our incredible staff, as well as all healthcare professionals, working today and over the festive season!
