Orthopaedic review – a message to patients and families
4 Jan 2026, 9 a.m.
There are stories running in the media today that report on the findings of a review into the care of patients by an orthopaedic surgeon who worked at Great Ormond Street Hospital between 2017 and 2022. This reports that a number of patients have come to harm. We are deeply sorry to all the children, young people and their families who have been hurt and impacted.
Background
In 2022 we asked the Royal College of Surgeons to review our Paediatric Orthopaedic service after concerns were raised by a number of our patient families and staff.
In addition, we undertook a review of the care given to all patients seen by the surgeon, Mr Jabbar. Their care was reviewed by a group of independent Paediatric Orthopaedic Consultants from other UK hospitals.
Reporting our findings
Individual patient reports were completed in October 2025 and have been shared with patients and their families. We also advised all patients and families that we were compiling a report summarising the overall outcomes of all the patient reviews, as well giving as details of the improvement work we've undertaken.
This report will be shared with all patients and families at the end of January 2026, before being made public.
Our intention throughout this process has been to share information with families first and we are sorry that some information has been published before we have been able to do this. We will be finalising our report, sharing it with families and publishing it as planned.
Support for patients and families
During our review of our patients’ care we have tried to be as open as we can with all families, but we know this can’t make up for the experience that they have had and neither can we fully understand the impact that this has had on their lives.
Psychological support is available for patients and their families. If you feel you would benefit from this, please contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 020 7829 7862 or by emailing pals@gosh.nhs.uk.
