Ellen Schroder has been appointed as the Chair of Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH).

For the last seven years, Ellen has been the Chair of East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust and she will take up her new role at GOSH towards the end of this year. She brings a wealth of public sector experience to the role, including 20 years at board level for large, complex NHS organisations. She was previously Vice Chair and lay member of the Camden Clinical Commissioning Group and, before that, a non-executive director of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and its predecessor St Mary’s NHS Trust, where she chaired both the audit and finance committees. Ellen holds various other non-executive positions including chairing the PFI companies which built Amersham and part of High Wycombe hospitals. She is also a trustee of the Radcliffe Trust, one of Britain’s oldest charities.

Prior to her roles in healthcare, Ellen spent 25 years in the City working in corporate finance for the investment banks Dresdner Kleinwort Benson and Wood Gundy Inc.

Ellen also has experience of Great Ormond Street Hospital, being both a parent of a child treated at the hospital and previously serving as a member of GOSH’s Clinical Ethics Committee.

I am delighted to be joining GOSH as Chair. It will be a real privilege to work with such dedicated and skilled staff to carry out world-class research and deliver outstanding care to their young patients. GOSH is particularly special for my family because my eldest child was successfully treated there many years ago. It is an exciting time in the hospital’s history. Its role in the NHS landscape is evolving and it is extending its reach internationally while building on the work done locally during the pandemic.

Ellen

We are extremely pleased that Ellen Schroder will be joining us as our new Chair. She brings a vast amount of experience and we look forward to working with her on our journey to deliver even safer, kinder and more effective specialist care to the children we treat. We operate in a complex local, national and international landscape. Ellen’s understanding and experience of the evolving NHS framework and her commercial experience will prove invaluable. We would like to thank Sir Mike Rake, our current Chair, for his leadership over the past six years. He has made an immense contribution to the shaping and delivery of our Above and Beyond strategy and defining the role GOSH plays in local, national, and international healthcare during a period of unprecedented external instability. Sir Mike is passionate about implementing transformative cultural change across the Trust and ensuring staff are supported to thrive at GOSH.
