How to refer a patient

For an outpatient appointment

As a tertiary care hospital, all children who attend GOSH must be referred via local hospital consultants, community paediatricians or in certain circumstances via a GP.

Guidelines for making a referral

To process a referral to the Plastic Surgery department at GOSH, we require the following minimum information:

Patient details

  • Name and details of patient including NHS number (if applicable), current GP and lead consultant.

  • 18-week pathway information including date referral decision made.

  • Whether an interpreter for the child / or family is required.

  • Please include, if relevant, details about social services involvement and parental responsibility.

Clinical questions

  • Reason for referral such as diagnostic, prognostic, second opinion or other.

  • Details of previous orthopaedic opinions.

  • Referral letter with current information and referral question.

  • details of relevant X-rays or scans.

As a specialist children’s hospital, we tend to see children who have already been seen by their local hospital consultant or community paediatrician.

Some of the conditions we treat are listed below.

Congenital hand anomalies

  • syndactyly

  • simple finger polydactyly

  • complex finger polydactyly

  • thumb polydactyly

  • absent or underdeveloped fingers

Ear surgery

  • microtia

  • ear reconstruction

  • prominent ears

Chest wall reconstruction

  • vascular anomalies and birthmarks

  • congenital melanocytic naevi (CMNs)

  • skin lesions

Our surgeons also work closely with other GOSH departments to treat children with other conditions.

The plastic surgeons run clinics on most days of the week. Children who have had plastic and reconstructive surgery are nursed on various wards at GOSH.
