Haematology, Oncology and Immunology
The Occupational Therapy team provide inpatient and outpatient care to children serviced by the Haematology, Oncology and Immunology teams at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The occupational therapists are available to answer your questions and to offer support to local services that may require additional information regarding your child's needs. This is to ensure continuity in care. The occupational therapist provides assessment and treatment of the skills required for school, self-care and play. This process may involve helping your child structure their day appropriately, providing adaptive equipment to support independence, fatigue management skills and adapting activities so that they are accessible.
With regards to infants, the occupational therapist will work with the other members of the multidisciplinary team to encourage the development of skills, while in hospital and after discharge. The occupational therapist may offer further advice on positioning, play activities and suitable toys to encourage development.
The occupational therapist will work with you and your child to minimise the effect that illness, treatment and long hospital stays can have on your child's ability to participate in daily activities.
Bone marrow transplant (BMT)
The occupational therapist is available on the ward and during BMT clinics to address any concerns you have about your child's development or participation in daily activities, including return to school. Any child under five years old undergoing a BMT is seen by the Occupational Therapy team as part of their routine clinic visit. The occupational therapist contributes to the multidisciplinary assessment, treatment and advice given to your and your child.
