Sodium bicarbonate baths
Information for parents and carers on sodium bicarbonate baths, and how they can help people with ichthyosis.
What is ichthyosis?
Ichthyosis is a group of skin conditions that cause dry, scaly skin. The skin may appear thickened, rough, or cracked. It is a genetic condition which is lifelong and there is no cure, but there are treatments that help to manage symptoms and improve comfort.
Why use a sodium bicarbonate bath?
Sodium bicarbonate is commonly known as baking soda. Please note, baking soda is not the same as baking powder, which has acid and a drying agent added to it.
Adding sodium bicarbonate to bath water can help:
- Soften dry, scaly skin
- Reduce itching and irritation
- Make gentle exfoliation easier after the bath
- Support the skin’s natural pH balance
It’s especially useful for people with ichthyosis, where regular bathing helps to manage skin build-up and promote comfort.
Sodium bicarbonate baths are suitable for children and adults. They are not a cure but can help ease symptoms. If you have any concerns, please speak to your Dermatology team.
How do I make a sodium bicarbonate bath?
You will need:
- Sodium bicarbonate.
- A clean bath with comfortably warm water.
Instructions:
- Fill the bath with warm water. Aim for around 20-30cm deep for a child or half full for an adult.
- Add 2-3 heaped tablespoons (30-45g) of sodium bicarbonate. For a full adult bath, you can use up to 4 tablespoons (60g).
- Stir the water until the powder is dissolved.
- Soak in the bath for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Pat the skin dry gently with a soft towel.
- Apply a moisturiser or emollient straight after the bath, while the skin is still slightly damp.
Tips and safety
- Always use lukewarm water- hot water can dry out or irritate the skin.
- Avoid getting bath water in the eyes as it may sting. If it accidentally gets into the eyes, rinse your eyes straight away with clean, lukewarm water.
- You can use this bath daily or several times a week, depending on your skin and routine.
What to do after bathing?
- There is no need to rinse the skin after bathing.
- Use fragrance free moisturisers.
- Gently lift the dead skin using a soft circular motion- comfifast mittens or debrisoft pads can help.
- Avoid rubbing the skin.
- Keep skin hydrated throughout the day.
Where can I buy sodium bicarbonate?
Sodium bicarbonate is available from pharmacies, supermarkets, or online. If buying online, look for food grade or pharmaceutical grade options.
