Jugnoo Rahi

Jugnoo is a practising ophthalmologist and an epidemiologist. She is an Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist, and Professor of Ophthalmic Epidemiology at the UCL GOS Institute of Child Health and the UCL Institute of ophthalmology.

Qualifications

After clinical training in London in paediatrics and then in ophthalmology (at GOSH, St Thomas’ Hospital and Moorfields), she completed masters and doctoral studies in epidemiology supported by sequential Medical Research Council Clinical Training Fellowships held jointly between the UCL GOS ICH and IO. In 2000 she was appointed Clinical Lecturer (2000) at ICH/GOSH and IO/MEH and in 2010 promoted to the UK’s first chair in Ophthalmic Epidemiology.

Research Interests

Jugnoo leads the Vision and Eyes Group based at GOS ICH, a unique multi-disciplinary population health sciences research group. Their interests are in visual health, eye disease and visual impairment in childhood and in the early life origins of and lifecourse influences on chronic complex eye conditions and visual health in adult life. Through their research they aim to enhance understanding to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment, and to inform service and policy decisions nationally and internationally.

Jugnoo is co-lead for Research in the Clinical and Academic Department of Ophthalmology.

The Department is part of the Ulverscroft Vision Research Group (UVRG) at ICH GOS UCL. This is a unique inter-disciplinary and cross theme initiative that she has led since 2007 (as inaugural Director). It is supported by a major ongoing charitable donation which has enabled the creation of course scientific posts and funded clinical and nonclinical doctoral training fellowships.
