Department of Orthopaedic and Spine Surgery

Targeted review into care of orthopaedics patients

We are carrying out a review into the care of some of our patients and have contacted them directly.

We asked the Royal College of Surgeons to review our paediatric orthopaedic service, after concerns were raised by a number of our patient families and staff.

We take all concerns incredibly seriously and have written directly to all those patients and their families who may be affected. We know that for them this could be a worrying time and we are sorry for the concern these letters may have caused.

We are committed to learning from every single patient that we treat, and to being open and transparent with our families when care falls below the high standards we strive for.

If you have any questions about the review, please contact our Patient Advice Liaison Service (PALs) on 0207 829 7862 or by email PALS@gosh.nhs.uk.

Welcome to the Department of Orthopaedic and Spine Surgery.

The Department acts as a tertiary referral centre for unusual or difficult elective paediatric orthopaedic conditions and for complex surgery of the growing spine. We usually only accept referrals from orthopaedic surgeons. Due to the nature of the service we provide and the high volume of referrals of very complex patients, we only accept very selective referrals from general practice (usually those needing operative treatment that cannot be offered locally). We do not provide treatment for patients with malignant bone tumours and sarcomas.

Our areas of expertise include:

  • Limb lengthening and limb deformity reconstruction
  • A dedicated service for Ponseti treatment of clubfoot
  • Surgery of the feet
  • Surgery of upper limb problems (we work with hand surgeons where needed)
  • Early treatment of congenital hip dysplasia and hip dislocation
  • Complex hip surgery in infants, children and adolescents up to 17 years of age
  • Orthopaedic treatment of skeletal dysplasia and syndromic disorders
  • Complex osteogenesis imperfecta and arthrogryposis
  • Neuromuscular conditions and neuro-disability
  • The whole range of paediatric spine surgery (scoliosis treatment)
  • Back pain in children
  • Complex deformity surgery of the growing spine

We work closely with the Department of Hand Surgery, Interventional Radiology, Rheumatology, Endocrinologyand Neurodisability.
