NIHR Great Ormond Street BRC Open Day

Our BRC helds its annual Open Day in conjunction with the London Science Festival.

Around 200 members of the general public visited us to learn more about medical research and how it changes lives. There was plenty of opportunity to take part in interactive sessions to meet our researchers. Activities included:

  • Interactive seminars covering genes, their effect on life, and gene therapy as a treatment option

  • Hands-on activities including pairing chromosomes, dressing up to ‘work’ in cell/gene therapy and using media to ‘perform’ cell/gene therapy

  • Laboratory tours

  • How to show the presence of bacteria through use of staining methods. This will illustrate how to go about identifying that someone has a bacterial disease.

  • What happens when in a string of events taking place inside the body means something is missing/wrong and how that relates to disease.

  • What DNA is made-up of using beads that can be made into a bracelet.
