GOSH Conference 2022 - Towards Inclusion

There was huge support with over 350 people attending the online event. Many more visited our onsite hubs at the Lagoon and Weston House.

This year’s conference Towards Inclusion focused on inequalities in healthcare and what colleagues from GOSH, the wider NHS and some non-NHS organisations are doing to tackle it. Towards Inclusion brought together key thinkers and innovators including Professor Mala Rao, who spoke about Racism in Medicine, and Dr Mark Hayden who spoke about Air Inequality.

We also welcomed parallel talks from GOSH experts including our Apprenticeships and Learning Disabilities Teams to name a few.

Lunchtime saw our Weston House poster hub “come to life” with 25 poster abstracts presented on work GOSH staff are doing around inclusion within our staff, our patients and education.

After lunch we moved to oral abstract presentations online where 12 of our highest scoring abstract submitters presented their work on the subject of inclusion. With the support of our judges, 6 abstract submissions were shortlisted and won a prize. All 124 abstract submissions will also be published in the Journal of Childhood Diseases.

The day ended with keynote speakers including Professor Katherine Woolf speaking about who gets access to medical work experience, Zara Todd on young disabled researchers, and Ryan Raghoo, ex-GOSH patient and Paralympian who spoke about inequalities as a young disabled person from an ethnic minority background.

We would like to again congratulate our Oral Presentation Winner Jo Wray and Runner-ups Polly Livermore and Rhian Thomas and Poster Winner Catherine Howes and Runner-ups James Deady and Graeme O’Connor.

Addressing inequalities and working towards inclusion is of the utmost importance.

We know there is still a lot more to be done, and GOSH is committed to prioritising this in the work we do for our patients and our staff.
