How to refer to the Orthodontic department

GOSH Orthodontic Acceptance Criteria

  1. Patients who are referred for an opinion only and who are under the care of GOSH for pre-existing medical conditions can be seen for advice and treatment planning.
  2. Patients who are under a nationally commissioned package of care (Cleft, Craniofacial, Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) with macroglossia), those with Craniofacial Microsomia, Treacher Collins and other complex syndromes will be seen and considered for treatment.
  3. Patients with complex medical conditions that preclude them from having treatment elsewhere will be seen for advice, treatment planning and treatment if appropriate.
  4. Occasional referrals from the wards for inpatient management will be seen if at all possible.
  5. Examination of patients under General Anaesthesia (GA).
  6. Orthodontic opinions between specialities within the department.
  7. In instances where patients are referred for orthodontic extractions at GOSH under GA who cannot have a GA elsewhere for medical reasons, reference should be made to the separate Standard Operating Procedure regarding these patients.

Additional Information

  1. Cases may be planned at GOSH but delivered locally where appropriate
  2. Cases may be refused on the basis of Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) and Index of Orthognathic Functional Treatment Need (IOFTN)
  3. Referrals to the BWS service are made to the BWS MDT rather than directly to the dental department
