About the Haemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre (CCC)

The Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) Haemophilia CCC cares primarily for children with inherited bleeding disorders and some with thrombotic conditions.

The complex nature of these lifelong disorders requires specialist medical and nursing care. The Department of Health has acknowledged this with the publication of the health circular HSG (93) 30, which states that all people with haemophilia should have access to comprehensive care.

GOSH has the largest haemophilia CCC for children in the UK and is one of the five largest in Europe. We specialise in complications of haemophilia and the other bleeding disorders such as the management of inhibitors. We also look after children with inherited thrombotic tendencies, which are less likely to cause problems before adulthood.

The centre receives referrals from other parts of south-east England and further afield in the UK.

The consultants and senior nurses are all qualified in the specialist care of children and are supported by teams of juniors who are receiving the unique specialist training that GOSH provides.

The medical consultants are paediatric haematologists with special interests in haemostasis and thrombosis. Other important members of the team are the parents and the children themselves who are partners in the care model of haemophilia management. The children receive the majority of their treatment at home from a very early age, reducing the number of visits to and the time spent in hospital. This enables the majority of patients to experience childhood normally.
