Children's Cancer Centre building work
Deconstruction of the frontage building to the ground floor level is complete and we are now preparing for the next phase of construction which is called 'piling'.
Piling involves using big machines to drill deep holes close to each other which are then filled with concrete to create the basement wall for the CCC. We are anticipating that this machine will be delivered to the construction site soon.
The piling machine uses guide holes as its starting point. These are being prepared at the moment along the side of the site by Great Ormond Street.
Work is also underway to dig out some of the old basement floor of the frontage building (which has been demolished to ground floor level). This work is near Cheetah Outpatients and the Oscar the boat area so it may be noisier than normal here.
In the autumn and winter we will dig out the rest of the old basement floor of the frontage building as we start to create the new deeper basement for the CCC. This work is likely to be noisy and cause vibrations.
All this activity means we are nearer to realising our ambition to provide a new home for our cancer services, as well as more space for our school, imaging, critical care and theatre services and an amazing new entrance for the whole hospital. Watch our progress video below - see if you can spot the water cannons which our contractor, Sisk, are using to help limit the impacts of the works on the hospital and our neighbours.
Last updated 22 July 2025.
We have worked closely with our contractor, Sisk, to limit the impacts of the works as far as possible by:
- having acoustic screens around works areas to reduce noise and using water to dampen down dust.
- having monitors in place to ensure that noise, vibration and air quality limits are not exceeded. There are also quiet periods between 7 and 8am, 12 and 1pm and 5-6pm.
- limiting vehicles coming to site each day.
Even with these limits, there may be noise and vibrations. If you or your child are sensitive to loud noises, you may wish to bring ear defenders with you to your appointment. Please talk to your ward team if the work is disturbing you or you have any concerns.
Changes that will be in place for the duration of the construction works
The main entrance on Great Ormond Street has closed. For most people coming to Great Ormond Street Hospital, the best alternative entrance is on Guilford Street.
Appointment letters and My GOSH will also let you know which entrance is best for you to use.
Patient pick-up and drop-off location is now on Guilford Street near the Morgan Stanley Clinical Building entrance. The Great Ormond Street entrance will be closed for the duration of the building works. Please do not use the entrance on Powis Place as this is for emergency ambulance access and staff only.
Great Ormond Street is now one-way (from Lambs Conduit Street to Queen Square). Cyclists will continue to be able to go both ways along all of the street. Access for emergency ambulances will continue to be permitted from Queen Square to Powis Place.
Information for local residents
If you live near Great Ormond Street Hospital, our GOSH community website provides information about the project and how the construction process will be managed to limit the impact on our neighbours.

How to get involved
Pick up your copy of "The Look Inside" magazine. It has been developed so children and young people can find out more about our Children's Cancer Centre and how it is being built and the difference it will make for everyone at GOSH. If you cant wait until you are next here, please email ccc@gosh.nhs.uk so we can send you a copy directly.

We would like to invite patients and their families to co-design the Children's Cancer Centre (CCC).
Kate, a children's nurse, is asking for current and former oncology parents to join the Parent Advisory Group to help develop the CCC.
The Parent Advisory Group meet virtually on Fridays from 12pm to 1pm once a month in a friendly and supportive environment to discuss what is happening with the centre and ask parents for their valuable suggestions.
You can email CCC.PPI@gosh.nhs.uk with your contact information and Kate will get in touch. Please inform them of any additional needs you may have to facilitate your involvement.
You can also register for updates by emailing CCC.PPI@gosh.nhs.uk
