Learning Disability Study Day hosted by the CSC

22 Feb 2019, 9:36 a.m.

In January the CSC hosted the second Learning Disabilities Study Day, in collaboration with our trust learning disabilities experts and the Baked Bean Theatre Company. The study day aimed to enable our healthcare workers to identify strategies to effectively support the care of patients with a learning disability. By considering where reasonable adjustments can be implemented and rehearsing the communication skills required to deliver safe and effective care to learning disabled patients and their families, our teams learned strategies to improve the care provision for our learning disabled patient population.

Twelve candidates attended across nursing, allied health and healthcare support staff groups, and evaluated the day highly. Our candidates scored their confidence in communicating with learning disabled patients as 2.8/5.0 pre-course and 4.08/5.0 following the study day. One-hundred percent of the candidates found the course useful in providing a greater understanding of how to implement reasonable adjustments for children and young people with learning disabilities.

Snapshot of candidate feedback:

“Really enjoyed the day, never had any specific training in this area before. Would definitely recommend this to my colleagues “

“Having learnt more about LD will impact my support and care for patients”

“Todays session will give me more confidence in my own skills in speaking and working with LD and autistic patients. It has also provided me with tools and tips and more understanding of additional needs, techniques and services available to help the patient experience”

The study day will run again on Monday 17 June and will be advertised in March. If you would like to note your interest in attending, please contact emma.broughton@gosh.nhs.uk.
