When A Child Dies

Caring for patients and their families at the end of life can be complex and challenging for health care workers.

When A Child Dies- aims to support health care workers to navigate difficult situations by introducing conversations and practical considerations around anticipation of death, the death of a patient, and transfer to the mortuary.

Course Overview

This two day course comprises interactive workshops, simulation scenarios and practical sessions; all aimed at supporting heath care workers to provide compassionate care when a child dies.

Course Structure:

Day 1: Virtual Course

Day 2: Face to face at Great Ormond Street Clinical Simulation Centre

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course you will be able to feel more confident in the following aspects of end of life care:

  • practical care of a patient when death is imminent and afterwards
  • care of parents before and after death
  • effective communication strategies
  • considerations around spiritual, cultural, and religious needs
  • legal aspects of certification
  • support available from the wider bereavement, mortuary, and chaplaincy teams
