Children's Kidney Stones team: Clinics and wards

The Stones Multidisciplinary Service uses a number of wards and departments throughout Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The Paediatric Urinary Stones clinics are located in Hippo outpatients, on level 4 of the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine RLHIM. It is likely that a urine sample will be requested so please liaise with the reception staff on arrival.

For selected cases, patients may be seen in the Clinical Nurse Specialist case to facilitate the Multi-Disciplinary Team review.

These are the wards where children come to on the day of the operation before being taken to our operating theatres.

Children come to Woodpecker before an operation if they are planned to be transferred to a ward post-operatively.

Nightingale ward cares for children having a day case procedure with planned discharge home the same day.

Panther Ward has 11-beds for Paediatric Urology and cares for a wide range of children from newborn to 17 years. It is located on level 6 of the Premier Inn Building (PICB). Patients requiring admission, either planned or as an emergency, are cared for by our expert Paediatric Urology nursing staff with in-house multi-disciplinary team support including nephrology, radiology, interventional radiology, dieticians and urology.

Urodynamics Unit is a busy day care unit located on Level 7 of Southwood building. Children come here for day case investigations and go home the same day.

For planned admissions, we carry out pre-admission clinics in the Urodynamics department. This is an outpatient appointment where you will be able to discuss your child’s planned operation with the team before coming in to hospital for your admission.

Your child will also have various tests and investigations carried out during this appointment. This avoids any delays on the day of the operation, test or procedure. Please be prepared to stay two to three hours.

The appointment is also useful if your child is apprehensive about any aspect of the hospital stay, our play specialists can help prepare your child, as can other members of the team.

We can also start to make plans for after the operation, for instance, if you need any equipment or supplies, these can be arranged beforehand.
