Haematology admission criteria

This is a list of patient diagnoses admitted to Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) by our Haematology team, the timeframe in which they should be treated and their estimated length of stay (LoS).

Health professionals are reminded that this information is for guidance only.

Emergency admissions

Children with the following diagnoses are considered an emergency and should be transferred to GOSH within hours from receipt of referral.

Diagnosis Estimated LoS
Haemophilia (for emergency procedure or life/limb threatening bleed) 4-5 days
High count leukaemic Determined by treatment protocol

Urgent admissions

Children with the following diagnoses should be transferred to GOSH within days from receipt of referral.

Diagnosis Estimated LoS
Haemophilia (with unresolved line sepsis requiring emergency removal) 4-5 days
Leukaemia Determined by treatment protocol

Elective admissions

Children with the following diagnoses should be referred to GOSH via the non-emergency pathway.

Diagnosis Estimated LOS
Haemophilia (non-urgent port insertion) 4-5 days
Sickle Cell Disease (for procedure) Determined by treatment protocol

Unlikely to admit

Blood transfusion - standard first line supportive therapy.
