Simon Blackburn

Mr Simon Blackburn joined Great Ormond Street Hospital as a Consultant Neonatal and Paediatric Surgeon in 2014.

Simon was appointed Director of Medical Education in December 2019 and is also Deputy Director of the GOSH Learning Academy.

Specialisms

Simon’s main area of interest is in paediatric colorectal surgery, which includes the treatment of anorectal anomalies and Hirchsprung’s disease. He is a member of specialist multidisciplinary teams providing expert care for children with cloacal anomalies, inflammatory bowel disease and gastrointestinal motility disorders. His practice also includes treating children born with abnormalities of the gastrointestinal tract, diaphragm and abdominal wall. 

Qualifications

Simon’s undergraduate medical education was at Guy’s King’s and St Thomas’ Medical School. His postgraduate training was in South East England and included posts in Brighton, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Chelsea and Westminster, Southampton and St Georges Hospitals.

Simon became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2013, and was awarded the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons Medal for his outstanding performance in the intercollegiate examination.

Research Interests

Simon has an ongoing interest in clinical research and has published and presented internationally on gastrointestinal surgery, neonatal surgery and minimally invasive surgery. He also has a research interest in surgical education.
