Dr Paul Winyard is an Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Nephrology at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and Head of the Nephro-Urology Research Unit at the Institute of Child Health (ICH).After medical school split between Cambridge (pre-clinical) and Oxford (clinical), Dr Winyard trained in Paediatrics at Charing Cross, Guy's, Oxford, Queen Elizabeth's Hackney and GOSH in the UK, with spells at Duke University and Philadelphia in the USA.

His first GOSH post was in 1990 and he has worked in associated hospitals/universities ever since. He completed his Paediatric Nephrology training in 1999, concurrently finishing a PhD on the Molecular Biology of Renal Malformations.

His clinical research and practice centres on children with kidney and urinary tract malformations, particularly those detected before birth. He sees pregnant ladies in a dedicated Fetal Nephro-Urology clinic at University College London Hospital to discuss the causes and possible outcomes of early kidney and urinary tract malformations in their babies.

He also runs a postnatal clinic at GOSH to follow up both these children and assess other with kidney malformations or polycystic kidney diseases.

Research Interests

Dr Winyard is a long-term champion of academic training and progressed from developing the ICH academic programme, which is the largest in the UK, to Academic Training Programme Director for the London Specialty School of Paediatrics.

He is also a founder member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) Academic Committee.

Dr Winyard has several research projects investigating pathophysiology and new treatments for dysplastic and polycystic kidneys, with clinical work on fetal renal malformations particularly focusing on new biomarkers that indicate disease severity and prognosis.
