Industrial action at GOSH - update for patients and families

6 Dec 2021, 4:04 p.m.

We have been told to expect industrial action from some of our security staff. This is scheduled from 7pm on Monday 6 December to 7am on Thursday 9 December. Fewer than 10 staff have told us they intend to join the action.

If you’re visiting the hospital during this time you may see a picket line outside, which we expect to be joined by some campaigners from outside the hospital. We know that coming to hospital can be a worrying time for families. We want to reassure you that our hospital will remain open as usual and anyone who comes to protest outside will not be allowed onto the site, particularly given our determination to maintain a safe environment during the pandemic.

The industrial action has arisen because the terms and conditions of our security team, who are employed by an external contractor, differ from the terms and conditions of staff employed by the NHS. We work with external contractors when it is the best way to provide a high-quality service, comply with regulations and get best value for public money while supporting good employment practices. The decision to employ our security staff through Carlisle Security Services was confirmed last August. The terms and conditions of the security team are set by Carlisle.

Our security colleagues are a valued part of the GOSH community, and we respect their right to peaceful protest.
