About the Diabetes service

The Diabetes service at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) regularly sees patients with rarer forms of diabetes.

We specialise in different types of diabetes; cystic fibrosis related diabetes (CFRD), new onset diabetes after transplant (NODAT), steroid induced diabetes and neonatal diabetes, but also support any patients who are coming into the hospital with any pre-existing types of diabetes.

For many of our patients diabetes is a secondary chronic disease which we recognise has additional physical and psychological health burdens. As a multi-disciplinary team we aim to treat diabetes in the context of the child or young persons whole treatment journey and support the other teams working with them and their family.

For staff, we regularly have bite-size teaching sessions on diabetes throughout the year. We also have diabetes champions all over the Trust, who attend an all-day session with the diabetes clinical nurse specialist. This involves learning all about different aspects of diabetes to gain expert diabetes knowledge, to help other staff members and family alike with out-of-hours support.
