Stoma closure

A stoma is an artificial opening into the body.

Stomas tend to be used to divert the intestines when they are not working properly so that faeces (poo) is passed directly from the body through an opening in the skin and collected in a bag.

Some children only need a stoma for a short while and then have an operation to reconnect the large intestine to the rectum and anus and close the opening in the skin.
