Ear, nose and throat admission criteria

This is a list of patient diagnoses which are admitted to Great Ormond Street Hospital by our Ear, nose and throat team, the timeframe in which they should be treated and their estimated length of stay (LoS). 
Health professionals are reminded that this information is for guidance only.

Emergency admissions

Children with the following diagnoses are considered an emergency and should be transferred to GOSH within hours from receipt of referral.
Diagnosis/Procedure Estimated LoS
Adenotonsillectomy (if airway compromised) 1 day
Airways requiring tracheostomy 10 days
Choanal atresia 1 day
Cochlear Implant with post-operative complications 2 days
Cystic hygroma (if the airway is compromised) 5 days
Exploration of mastoid 1 day
Foreign body causing mid-line shift 1 day
Inhaled foreign body eg battery 1 day
Laryngeal cleft (Type 3 or above) 10 days
Mastoiditis with brain involvement 7 days

Urgent admissions

Children with the following diagnoses should be transferred to GOSH within days from receipt of referral.

Endoscopic examination of larynx and biopsy of lesion 1 day
Endoscopic operation on lower respiratory tract 1 day
Subglottic haemangioma 7 days

Elective admissions

Children with the following diagnoses should be referred to GOSH via the non-emergency pathway.

Examination of ear under anaesthetic Day case
Laryngotracheal reconstruction 10 days
Myringotomy with insertion of ventilation tube Day case

Subglottic haemangioma 7 days
Submandibular 1 day
Tympanoplasty 1 day


Unlikely to admit

  • Removal of sutures
