Healthcare scientists

Debbie Briggs

The prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) relies on a broad range of scientific knowledge and technical skills. Along with doctors and nurses, scientists and technicians are essential members of today's healthcare team.Around 55,000 people work in healthcare science – five per cent of the total NHS workforce.

Healthcare Scientists work in one of four broad areas:

At GOSH we participate in the local, national and international training of healthcare scientists. We do this by employing trainee Biomedical Scientists and supporting specialist learning for Clinical Scientists and Clinicians enrolled in national training programmes.

We are also involved in educating Healthcare Scientists by passing on our specialist knowledge in paediatric laboratory medicine.
