We provide explanations on some of the professionals that you might meet who work in this environment, and how you can train in this area of work.





A counsellor helps people talk about how they are feeling about life. They listen and try to suggest new ways of looking at things.

A family therapist encourages people to consider each other's perspectives, experiences and beliefs.

A psychiatrist is a medically qualified doctor who has a specialist training in mental health.


A psychologist focuses on the mind and human behaviour to try and explain why people act in certain ways.

An art, music or dance therapist helps people develop new ways to communicate what they are thinking or feeling.

A psychotherapist helps people explore their thoughts and feelings and how these are connected to their behaviour.
A social worker helps people access services and support for anything from housing to mental health issues.
