NIHR funding

NIHR commissions and funds NHS, social care and public health research to develop the evidence to support decision making by professionals, policy makers, patients and carers.

The NIHR funds a range of programmes addressing a broad range of health priorities. Funding is based on the quality and relevance of the research to personal social services, public health and the NHS.

Calls are issued for:

  • Commissioned research to address specific topic areas
  • Researcher-led research to fund questions proposed directly by researchers
  • Themed calls to meet an identified health challenge or government priority

Please Note:

Animal Studies: NIHR does not itself fund basic research or work involving animals and/or animal tissue.
Biomarkers: Research that tests whether application of new knowledge can improve treatment or patient outcomes, and has obvious potential benefit within years, is within remit. This could be research to test the application of a known biomarker. Searching for a biomarker is out of remit.
