About the Eating Disorders Team
The Eating Disorder Team (EDT) is headed by Dr Elaine Chung, Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, and paediatric aspects of patient's care are overseen by Dr Lee Hudson, Consultant Paediatrician. The full multidisciplinary team consists of experienced senior clinicians in psychology, psychiatry, paediatrics, nursing, dietetics, family therapy, and child psychotherapy who are experts in their fields. The team is recognised nationally and internationally for its work, teaching and research in eating disorders.
As a tertiary referral centre, children and young people are referred from other specialist services in mental health or paediatrics, usually from other specialist eating disorders services. They are typically referred to the EDT because they may not have responded to treatment in the usual way, because their diagnosis is unclear, or because there is a need for treatment at a level of intensity that cannot be provided locally, such as needing to be a day patient or inpatient. Sometimes it is simply to provide reassurance that everything that can be done is being done.
Some children and young people are referred to the EDT for treatment, while many come only for assessment and a 'second opinion' about treatment they are already receiving. The child or young person may currently be an inpatient, in the early acute stages of their illness or have been ill for some time. Please have a look at our Referrals page for more information.
The EDT specialises in children with (prepubertal/early puberty) anorexia nervosa, for whom we offer:
- An enhanced outpatient treatment programme, as well as day patient and inpatient care
- Evidence-based family treatment, in the context of a multidisciplinary team, with expertise in medical, dietetic and therapeutic aspects of treatment
- Bespoke treatment plans tailored to each family's needs for those with typical eating disorders
- Consultations around complex cases
- Assessment and treatments for medical complications because of eating disorders
