Manual of Children's Nursing Practices

The Great Ormond Street Hospital Manual of Children’s Nursing Practices, published by Wiley-Blackwell, was launched at an event at the hospital on Wednesday 6 June. The new evidence-based manual of practical skills in children’s nursing will ensure children’s nurses everywhere have access to a high quality, up-to-date and evidence-based reference. It builds on the extensive expertise in children’s nursing developed at Great Ormond Street Hospital, encompassing all aspects of children’s nursing from the most basic aspects of everyday practice to advanced practice in high dependency and intensive care.
The manual:
• Is clear, user-friendly and easy to understand
• Contains recommendations for expert care
• Encompasses all aspects of children’s care
• Highlights specific needs of neonates and adolescents
• Is placed in the context of interdisciplinary care of the child
• Includes the rationale for each action involved in clinical procedures - ‘why’ as well as ‘how’
Fiona Smith, Adviser in Children and Young People's Nursing at the Royal College of Nursing, said: “Every children’s nurse, whether they are a specialist or just starting out, benefits from the experiences of others and the evidence which supports professional practice. This manual is a great asset to nurses who care for children in any setting, and it is designed to be as user-friendly as possible for nurses with all levels of expertise. Based on rigorous evidence and extensive nursing experience, I would recommend this as an excellent guide for all practitioners working to ensure children and families have the best possible experience wherever they are receiving care.”
Liz Robinson, a clinical nurse specialist at Great Ormond Street Hospital and one of the editors of the manual said: “I was delighted to be involved in this manual. I hope it will help give nurses and student nurses immediately applicable best practices, giving them greater confidence to practice professionally and carry out evidence-based clinical procedures in the important field of children and young people’s nursing.”
Liz Morgan, Chief Nurse and Director of Education at Great Ormond Street Hospital said: “As our hospital is a centre of expertise and excellence, it is important that we play our part in influencing and promoting high standards of clinical care by providing support and developing resources for other nurses caring for children and young people both in the UK and abroad. All nurses should have a high quality, up-to-date and evidence-based reference readily available and this manual seeks to ensure nurses working in child health have a useful resource at their fingertips to help them provide the very best nursing care to their patients.”
Andy Robinson, VP and Managing Director, Health Sciences, Wiley-Blackwell said: “Nurses perform a complex and vital role in patient care. Our aim is to support nurses by providing clinical resources that enable them to work more effectively and efficiently and achieve professional excellence in nursing and patient care. We are privileged to work with the dedicated team at Great Ormond Street Hospital to publish this clinical manual, providing children and young people’s nurses with the knowledge and skills they need in everyday practice to be confident, accountable practitioners.”
