About the Neurology department

The Neurology department provides a specialist (tertiary) service for the diagnosis and treatment of children with neurological disorders, who are already under the care of a paediatrician or other paediatric specialist.

This means those medical opinions, investigations and treatments which, because of their unusual or specialised nature, cannot be provided by a district hospital or community paediatric service (ie secondary level services).

Partnership with local services

In every case, the care of children will be shared between the secondary level service and the specialist (tertiary) service at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).

An effective partnership, with continued secondary level involvement is essential for patients (as they will benefit from services which are better integrated with the community and schools), for the secondary services (who can use their considerable skills and knowledge of local services to provide this integrated service) and for the GOSH service (as it allows us to provide our specialist services and expertise for the benefit of a larger number of children).

Location of service delivery

At other hospitals

Outpatient services are provided at some district hospitals, as part of the neurology outreach service.

The GOSH Neurology department also has links with Young Epilepsy in Lingfield.
